Organization Chart

What is an Organization Chart?
An Organization Chart is a diagram displaying the relationship between work Positions (or roles) in a Business. It starts at the top with the highest management position (usually the CEO) and progresses down through the management positions and on to the technical and administrative positions.

What is the Problem with Organization Charts?
Organization charts are generally not developed with a focus on the future of the business. They are often a representation of how the business is currently structured. Organizations charts should be developed to communicate how a Business will look when it is fully developed.

Organization charts are often developed to suit the employees currently employed in the business. An Organization Chart should instead be developed around the individual work Positions that have been identified in the Business. The Employees should then be assigned to the Positions that they are currently filling.

In addition to the above, Organization Charts are often not maintained with the latest information relating to who is filling the Positions and who they should be reporting to. This information should be communicated to employees so they have a good understanding of who they are accountable to as well as who they should speak to about different areas of the business.

What is the Benefit of using Organization Charts in your Business?

Organization charts form an extremely effective planning tool for your Business. By taking the time to think about how your business will look when it is fully developed and then documenting this in an Organization Chart you will find your company will grow towards the structure you have defined.

When you communicate the future structure of your business to your employees there is less potential for problems with employees as they understand where they are placed in the business and what opportunities exist for their career advancement.
